An event dedicated to journalists in the EUROCLIMA+ pavilion at COP25. 7 December 7 at 4 p.m., with Facebook live transmission.

November 25, 2019. According to what science indicates, in order to achieve the goal of not exceeding the 1.5°C rise in temperature and not exacerbate the climate crisis we are currently experiencing, CO2 emissions must be reduced by 50% by 2030 and we must achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

The next 5 years are crucial to changing the course of things, and this includes the public agenda that influences policies and what consumers choose, adopting decisions that modify behaviours, change habits and promote civic co-responsibility.

However, the media and public opinion in Latin America today allocate around 1% of news to climate change-related topics (source: Climate Radar indicator).

In order to respond to questions about how to put the issue of climate change on the public agenda in order to align policies and consumerism with what science asks of us, during COP25 the dialogue space “Journalism for climate action: challenges and opportunities for the media,” The event is expected to generate reflection on the role and opportunity for journalism to become an agent of change and promoter of climate action, continuously addressing the issue of climate change with rigor and quality.

Specialists from Latin America and Europe will participate in the event, including Arturo Larena Larena, director of EFE VERDE, who will share with journalists the experience of one of Europe’s main information platforms, a pioneer that specialises in environmental journalism.

The COP25 in Spain is a crucial moment to promote global climate action and commitment at the level of all actors in society. The time is now, and journalists and communicators have a fundamental role in promoting this process.

The side event “Journalism for climate action: challenges and opportunities for the media” will be held on Saturday, December 7, at 16:00, in the EUROCLIMA+ Programme Pavilion, IFEMA block 8 (COP25 venue).

It will be attended by specialists from Latin America and Europe, including Joséluis Samaniego, director of ECLAC's Sustainable Development and Human Settlements Division; Arturo Larena Larena, director of EFE VERDE; and Maite Cigarán (ConexionCOP) and Katiana Murillo (LatinClima) as moderators.
