Objective (provisional)

This event on indigenous peoples and climate change will contribute to the work needed to better integrate indigenous knowledge, perspective and participation in climate decisions and actions at the national and international levels, and the building of bridges between state and non-state actors.

Presentation (provisional)

Indigenous peoples are among the most vulnerable populations to the effects of global warming because of their close relationship with the environment and their direct dependence on natural resources. Including their visions and ensuring their participation in national and international climate policy decisions is crucial. The side event will show how national policies can foster the participation of indigenous peoples and analyse how climate action based on a participatory approach can promote sustainable development and poverty eradication.

The event will further explore the role that LAC communities can play in the work of the Local Communities and Indigenous Peoples Platform (LCIPP), and it will showcase some progress made under the Euroclima programme by countries in the LA region. Panellists will present examples of best practices for participatory climate actions and share their experiences.
