Objective

To promote dialogue and discussion among experts from the countries and EUROCLIMA+-approved projects, on the relationship between climate and extreme hydro-meteorological phenomena and disasters, capitalising on all the knowledge regarding drought and flood management, providing solutions, instruments and alternatives, from different interventions and approaches.

Presentation

As climate change becomes more apparent, the Latin American region is gradually facing more frequent episodes of extreme rainfall and water scarcity, and as a result the vulnerability of water supply sources, production infrastructure and systems, and populations living in at-risk areas is increasing.

In this context, from the EUROCLIMA+ programme of the European Union (EU), the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) and the French Development Agency (AFD) launched a call for project funding in 2017 that has allowed the approval of interventions focused on disaster risk management due to droughts and floods.

A total of seven approved projects allow a comprehensive and innovative approach to address the management of droughts and floods in a context of climate change, promoting the development of regulatory and planning frameworks, the development of climate prediction and analysis instruments, early warning mechanisms and alternatives for financing risk management.
