Strengthening indigenous sustainable food production systems as climate change-resilient measures in Central America

Objective

To strengthen the capacities of subsistence farmers and fishers to improve indigenous agricultural and protein production systems, making them more sustainable and resilient to climate change and to contribute with them to the NDCs in the national agricultural, marine coastal, and adaptation policies of Guatemala and Panama.

4 territorial-community-scale adaptation plans for adapting, improving, and strengthening their resilient food agricultural production systems were published.

Document on estimating resilient food production and diversification showed an increase of 30 percent.

Establishment of community and family seed banks

9 seed banks of food importance were established in the Maya-Kaqchikel, Maya-Q'eqchi and Guna regions This milestone will mark the establishment of community and family seed banks, as appropriate, in the Maya-kaqchikel, Maya-q'eqchi and Guna regions.
