The environment ministers of Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica and Uruguay, within the framework of the Conference of the Parties at their 24th meeting in Poland, called for the support of the European Union in capacity building for the development of Long-Term Strategies (LTS), compliance with the NDCs and climate action in cities, aimed at meeting the goals of the Paris Agreement.

Article 4, paragraph 19 of the Paris Agreement invites all Parties to formulate and communicate long-term strategies for development with low greenhouse gas emissions. Under this framework, the governments of Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica and Uruguay agreed to build, in coordination, a regional network for long-term climate planning. The action "Regional collaboration for transparency and compliance with NDCs and the generation of long-term climate strategies" is the result of this process, which is now presented in a virtual session.

This initiative seeks to reduce the common gaps in the planning and implementation of climate actions in the aforementioned countries. By strengthening capacity with instruments of knowledge and exchanges. Its objectives are:

  1. Capacity building for the development of long-term climate strategies (ELP);
  2. The creation of a link between the ELP and the NDC, thus promoting the updating and increasing ambition of the 2030 commitments and,
  3. Develop capacities in local governments and stakeholders in the territory oriented to the implementation of ELP and NDC.

This action is developed within the framework of the Action line "Strengthening of institutions, plans and policies linked to development and advancement of national climate change goals" of the EUROCLIMA + Program, and is implemented through the UN Environment, FIIAPP, GIZ, and CEPAL.

Given the current situation of global coronavirus contingency, the session will take place through a virtual platform.
